THE FOUNDING OF Troy Alumni Chapter
Troy Alumni Chapter (TAC) HistoryIn the summer and fall of 2011, a group Kappa brothers came together to explore the idea of establishing an alumni chapter in Troy, Alabama. It had been discussed off and on for years, about trying to establish a chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., in Troy. This time, for this group of Kappa brothers, it was time to put the ideas and plans of the past into action. Several organizational meetings were held in the fall of 2011 and early winter of 2012. It was then decided that this was the time to officially pursue a charter for an alumni chapter in Troy.Troy Alumni founding member, Brother Andre Pollard took the lead role in the push to obtain a charter. Brother Pollard communicated directly with Linnes Finney, Jr., Esq. Brother Finney at that time was the Southern Province Polemarch. A petition was filed with the Southern Province for Troy to apply for chapter status. Brother Finney provided specific guidelines to follow in the effort to obtain a charter. The brothers were instructed to focus on community service and document everything you do.This group of interested brothers became to be known as The Troy Kappa Alumni Association. The Troy Kappa Alumni Association was advised to work in the community and to consider creating a booklet depicting and reflecting our works and deeds in the local community. The first order of business for the new association was to elect officers. The elected officers for the Troy Alumni Association were;Brother Andre Pollard, PolemarchBrother Al Byrd, Vice PolemarchBrother Dwight Brooks, Keeper of RecordsBrother Alvin Tucker, Keeper of the ExchequerThe second thing decided was a meeting location, time and place. Brother Daron Fayson advised that he felt he could get permission for us to use the Colley Senior Center facility anytime we needed it. Subsequently, it was decided and agreed upon that monthly association meetings would occur at the Colley Senior Center on the 3rd Sunday of every month at 5pm in the City of Troy. The Executive Board would meet the Monday before the Sunday frat meeting to put together the upcoming meeting agenda. The third course of action was to establish the Executive Board. The four (4) main officers were automatically members with the three (3) at large members being appointed/elected/selected.The Troy Kappa Alumni Association had the following members:Brother Andre PollardBrother Al ByrdBrother Alvin TuckerBrother Dwight BrooksBrother Daron FaysonBrother Michael SibleyBrother Octavius JacksonBrother Juan CarpenterBrother Wade ManoraBrother Abraham ClarkBrother DeAndre MeadowsBrother James DavisBrother Jerome SolomonThe Troy Kappa Alumni Association quickly became active in the community. As there were no other all male groups doing community service in the Troy community, the Troy Kappa Alumni Association became active in community affairs very quickly. Some of those events were; The annual senior fish fry which actually started out with hamburgers and hot dogs the first year. The senior picnic menu was later changed when Brother Fayson and Brother Solomon decided to purchase fish and then donated the fish to ensure the seniors were served hot fish on the designated picnic day in May (Older American’s Month). The Troy Kappa Alumni Association also visited several local churches during their regular services i.e., St. Paul A.M.E., Shiloh Missionary Baptist and First Baptist Missionary. The brothers felt this was a good way of making the community aware of our presence.Troy Kappa Alumni Association started our relationship with the Boys and Girls Club of Pike County during this time as well. Another organization that we embraced and begin supporting in 2012 was the Pike Regional Child Advocacy Center (PRCAC) which we still support.Another event that Troy Kappa Alumni Association sponsored in 2012 was a breakfast for the local Troy Veteran Home, veterans. This was held in November of 2012 (Veterans Day is always November 11). Unfortunately, this facility closed shortly thereafter and has never reopened. In January 2013, all of of these collective events from the previous 12 months were documented with pictures, comments and news articles, put into a professionally made booklet and presented to the Southern Province Polemarch and the Southern Province Executive Board as a statement of Troy Kappa Alumni Association’s commitment to the Troy/Pike County community and the viability and need of a chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., in Troy Alabama. After a thorough review by the Southern Province Executive Board it was determined that Troy Kappa Alumni Association was worthy of chapter status. The chartering ceremony was set for Friday March 1, 2013 at the Colley Senior Center at 6pm.
